About Exhausts

Your exhaust system is effectively a series of pipes and boxes specially designed to channel emissions away from the front of the vehicle, reduce engine noise and maintain optimum fuel efficiency.

All exhausts produce 6 gases as emissions; of the six three are less harmful (nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapour) and three are toxic (carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and nitrogen monoxide). The job of the exhaust, catalytic converter and its monitoring system is to maintain the correct balance of emissions, check the engine is running efficiently and move the emissions away from the vehicle occupants.

Typical Wear and Tear:

– Driving habits (short trips take their toll on exhaust system life)
– Road conditions (salt, road spray, bumps)
– Vehicle type
– Age of exhaust system parts

Exhaust System Symptoms to watch out for:

Maintain a safe car with regular exhaust system checks.
– Loud noise
– Rattling noise when starting, accelerating or braking
– Check engine or service engine light comes
– The smell of rotten eggs or burning could indicate a problem with the catalytic converter.
– The smell of exhaust fumes may indicate an exhaust leak
– Drowsiness while driving

Note:

Excessive idling allows water to condense in your exhaust system, which can lead to corrosion.

Exhaust System Components includes:

Car Exhaust System

Exhaust Manifold:

The exhaust manifold acts like a funnel. It collects the gases from all cylinders (where gas is turned into kinetic/movement energy) and releases them through to the exhaust pipes.

Oxygen Sensor:

The oxygen sensor is positioned in the exhaust pipe and the goal of the sensor is to help the engine run efficiently and produce as few emissions as possible. It monitors the amount of oxygen found in the exhaust gases and communicates to information to the engine’s computer. The computer then adjusts the mixture to ensure the cleanest combustion possible.

Catalytic Converter:

The catalytic converter reduces the amount of harmful emissions produced by the engine and transforms them into water vapors and other less harmful gases so that they can be safely released into the atmosphere.

Exhaust Pipes:
Each Exhaust Pipe is designed specifically for its model. This pipe is used to route engine exhaust to the rear of the vehicle.

Resonator:
The resonator works in tandem with the muffler to aid in noise reduction.

Muffler:
Muffler is a metal container which reduces noise produced by the engine; something like a silencer muffles the discharge of a weapon.

Tail Pipe:
The tail pipe can be found at the rear of the car. It carries exhaust gases and emissions safely away from the vehicle and out into the atmosphere.
